New York Lights
New York is a marmite city, you either love it or you hate it. But it is definitely worth experiencing at least once if you have the opportunity.
New York is a marmite city, you either love it or you hate it. But it is definitely worth experiencing at least once if you have the opportunity.
The amazing thing about New York is that it is a constant experience, you can walk down any street at any time of day and something extraordinary is highly likely to happen. It is as busy at midnight on Broadway as rush hour on Wall Street.
I walked down one side-street and came across Kim Cattral filming Sex and the City. An excited New Yorker asked us what was going on and was very disappointed at our response – ‘I thought it was something interesting like a fire’.
Whilst walking down the street your eyes are bombarded from all angles with unique visions, and don’t forget to look upwards because the city continues hundreds feet above street level and there’s often just as much to see. If you crane your neck enough you might even get a glimpse of the sky.
Obviously the Empire State Building offers extraordinary views all around, but one tip if you want to avoid the crowds is to climb one of the other hundreds of skyscrapers. Not only will you not have to fight your way to the top, but you’ll also get to see what the Empire State Building looks like rather than just the inside of its elevator.
Depending how long you are in the city you may start to feel a little claustrophobic, Manhattan is surprisingly small for the amount it crams in, so take some time out either exploring the extensive Central Park or take a ferry across to Statten Island, waving to the Statue of Liberty as you pass.
