Music, Art and Dance

Grupo Cultural Jongo da Serrinha was founded in 2000 with the objective to continue the work begun by Maria Joana Rezadeira and Mestre Darcy more than 40 years ago to preserve the Jongo musical heritage while providing social assistance to the low-income community of Serrinha.
Jongo is the precursor of Samba and was brought to Brazilian soil by Angolan slaves. In addition to Jongo classes, specific workshops are provided in various art forms. Jongo de Serrinha students and faculty from the age of 1 to 83 exhibit their talent in music, dance, and other cultural themes through shows in Brazil and around the world. The shows are divided into 3 parts demonstrating the progression of Brazilian music from Jongo to Samba. 200 children are enrolled in the Jongo da Serrinha program. Our programs are formatted according to our volunteers' abilities and interests and the partner organization necessities, in a way it is very rewarding and productive to both parts
